First Impressions can be changed...

SUPERMAN RETURNS baby!

oh yes...its Superman. I've always been a fan of Superman. From the porcelain nightlight of my childhood who looked more Chinese then Anglo-like Kryptonians in other media... to my current Smallville obsession.

The first trailer left me cold, but this one is very encouraging. I still think Kate and Brandon look too young for the roles but "bring it on"...this looks good. Real good. For the first time in years the summer movie season has me excited. "X-Men - The La st Stand" looks awesome too.

Well here goes my first post not just about music..

Well I said this blog would be about whatever I was tuned into and so far I've written mostly about music which I find to be perhaps the most emotionally stirring form or media today. Well today I broaden the horizons of this blog and tackle a couple more things...

Movies: Recently I saw "2046", a film by Wong Kar Wai. Now, I'd seen a couple of his past movies, namely "Fallen Angels" and "In the Mood for Love". 2046 was a loosely connected "sequel" to "In the Mood for Love". Well, one thing I've come to expect from Wong's movies is that they are presented in a way where things seem hardly real in terms of the metal of the characters, the presentation of visuals, the pairing of the soundtrack and just about everything else that makes the experience almost as if a dream. The story telling to this movie(which is decidely non sequetor) in particular makes you feel that way as there is alot there to make you guess about the characters and want you to dig into them but its hardly ever shown. Its as if it is story telling by subtle suggestion, not subtle in that one can tell what the movie is trying to say but just that it rarely will come out and just tell you. You are left to interpret by lines that are used time and again as the movie progresses. Subtle yet obvious I suppose. Anyway, as you can probably tell, I think its a movie worth seeing. Even though the plot (there almost is none) is way way way simple, this rathar lengthy movie has you wanting to see more all the time. The visuals are absolutely stunning and the very stylized sequences are some fo the best I've seen in a long long time. Easily one of my favorite movies of the past few years.

And now for something completely different...that I caught on the tube. "Butteryfly Effect". I never could quite tell what this movie was about from the trailers but I thought I'd give it a watch anyway...heck, it was the best thing on at the time. The movie shows a famous quote about chaos theory...you know the one about a butterfly flapping its wings could cause tramatic weather far far away (yes i'm paraphrasing here!). Anyway, that quote is the movie's namesake but I think its a little misapplied here. Anyway, this movie is sort of a dark 21st century take on teh age old question "What if". Its completly unbeleivable but does get one to think about what I refer to as "causality", in a very tangible way for people to understand. Causality is not something people think of everyday. Cause and Effect, and the effects of that effect etc etc. In that way, this movie was very enjoyable. Its a thought provoking, thriller melodrama all in one.

TV: Smallville's 100th episode in January was AWESOME. Great Story, decent acting great music(Peter Gabriel's "I Greive" is just about perfect for the scene and a powerful piece all by itself)....just Great Television! The few episodes since then could use alot of work. Anyhow, lets hope it gets better when they return with new episodes after the olympics...
As for the olympics...not been watching those...not sure why though. Just couldn't get excited for them. That and because of them none of my shows have new episodes...I need a new Scrubs dammit!
Oh and as far as reality TV..."Dancing with the Stars"...Stacy was robbed! Robbed I say! now back to your regularly scheduled blog...bye!

Somewhere Over the Rainbow....

Somewhere Over the Rainbow seems to be where this man's voice came from. Its amazingly tender and powerful at the same time. The man I refer to is the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. A gentle giant in with a velvet voice whose music is so popular in his native Hawaii that he's been called the "Bob Marley" of Hawaii.

Most people (myself included) stumble upon his music while watching movies or TV. Personally, I was flipping channels one day quite some time ago and happend upon what happened to be the closing scenes of "Meet Joe Black". To tell the truth I stopped flipping because Claire Forlani caught my eye. Then something else completely different happened. As the closing credits aired Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's medley of Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World came on. I found the song to be chillingly melodic and immeasurably warm. It stayed with me from that day on...to be honest I completly forgot what the song was and couldn't remember what I had just heard. Its effect was remembered and had that kind of power on me. The next time I heard the words "What a Wonderful World", it jogged my memory and I began my search for the song. Thanks to the internet, I found out exactly who did the song but more suprisingly that other people had similar experiences to mine. People had heard the song in "Finding Forrestor", or an episode of "ER" or like me had discovered it in "Meet Joe Black" and NEEDED to find out more about it and of course to hear it again out loud - instead of just in hearts. In some respects I guess that is a high compliment to be paid to a song...to use it in a medium like movies or tv, because if someone picks a song for a scene its as if they are saying the song can say just as much as the actors and the writing...that in and of itsef speaks volumes about how emotionlly evocative it can be. Its no suprise to me that my soundtracks to movies and tv shows dominate my CD player and ipod play lists these days (there will surely be more posts on those).

Anyway, I digress...go listen to the free samples on Amazon's site for a taste of what the music is like.

For me, I know I will be purchasing the CD soon enough as I've had the chance at hearing other tracks off the "Facing Future" Album. The Medley I spoke of is also available on the Finding Forrestor and Meet Joe Black Soundtracks, but now that I've discovered "Iz", I want more.

First Up - "Beautiful"

In the opening video post here, I'm featuring James Blunt's "Beautiful". It is one of those songs that I coudln't stop myself from playing over in my head. The song has a mellow flavor to it even as its lyrics seem dire and desperate voice at times. Quite a simple gem of a song actually. Enjoy.

Oh, as with all new video codes, it will run in the sidebar until it is replaced by a a new one. You can always come back to the original post to find a link to it...like this:
